Kite Surfing FAQ

1.When is the best time to come to Thailand for kitesurfing?

Normally the best period is from the beginning of November until the end of April but possibly due to the effects of global warming our low seasons (June, July and August) are getting increasingly good.

2.What conditions do you teach in?

At all our locations we teach in shallow flat water where you can stand everywhere, this makes it enormously faster and easier to learn, our instructors can be standing right next to you just about all the time.We are the only school in Thailand that offers this.

3.What are the average windspeeds at your 3 different locations?

In Chumpon,{November and December}, windspeeds are usually between 14 and 22 knots with many 18 knot days. In Hua Hin,{March and April}, windspeeds are usually between 12 and 18 knots with many 16 knot days. In Phuket{January,February,July and August} windspeeds are usually between 12 and 18 knots with many 16 knot days.

4.How does the north east monsoon work exactly?

The north east monsoon is the main wind maker in Thailand. Thailand experiences the north east monsoon from the middle of October to the middle of March. The north east monsoon brings strong north easterly winds from China. In the middle or second half of October these north east winds first arrive in the northern part of Thailand. Chumpon is one of the first areas to get it.Areas to the north of Chumpon are too far inside the gulf of Thailand and are too sheltered thus getting less wind. After it's arrival the north east monsoon slowly moves southwards, usually by the middle of December it's full power has reached Phuket and then finally by the beginning or midle of January it reaches Singapore.

5.Does it rain a lot in the north east monsoon?

In October when the north east monsoon first arrives there is widespread rain all over Thailand. In the first half of November Chumpon still experiences some rain showers but these don't last long and most of the time the weather is good.As the monsoon moves southwards it takes the rain with it. The south of Thailand on the east coast from Surat Thani downwards, experiences much heavier rain because the north east wind has covered a long distance crossing the south china sea and has picked up a lot of moisture along the way

6.Does it get cold in the north east monsoon?

In Chumpon in the evenings the temperature goes down to about 20 degrees sometimes, you might want to bring a sweater.During the day it's a very pleasant 28 degrees. In Phuket and Hua Hin it's warm all year round.

7.In March and April it's supposed to be windy in Hua Hin but every time I look at the weather website "windguru" it shows very little wind for Hua Hin during these months.

Weather websites like windguru only show "pressure wind",ie wind that's caused by low presurre and high pressure systems.Windguru does not show "thermal winds",that is wind caused by the heating of the land during the day.Windguru might show only a 4 knot southerly wind while it's really blowing 18 knots. In March and April Hua Hin gets very consistent thermal winds.

8.How many students do you teach per teacher?

We teach a maximum of 2 students per teacher. This way we can closely supervise each student and make the learning process easier, faster and safer. Most other schools teach 4 students per teacher.
